Has Anyone Used...

The Furminator? For 60 bucks I need some honest reviews before I buy this thing. I'm neck deep in Cardi hair. Oh yeah... and Heeler hair.

I Skipped the Marshmallow Dream Bar

Most days I really like my job, and they say you shouldn't put anything on the internet that you wouldn't want to see plastered on a billboard the next day, so thank goodness my blog is blocked from Google search.

Today I skipped the Marshmallow Dream Bar on my trip to Starbucks. This is a big step for me, as I am more addicted to the Dream Bar than I am to the ventifatfreeskinnyvanillalatte that turns my tongue yellow because of it's radioactive sugar substitute. Why did I skip the Dream Bar, you ask? Because my boss said I am fat.

Yes, fat. Packing on the extra pounds. Thick around the middle. Climbing the charts in jeans sizes. Obsese, my friends. I would love to argue with her, but I can see the scale quake as I walk towards it, and sometimes the toilet shakes when I sit down. I'm a bonafide chunky monkey, weighing in at (dare I say it publicly?) 203 pounds. Gasp.

I like my sweets and it's written in my genetic code. My grandma used to lock herself in her bedroom and eat truffles while she read romance novels. I like Dream Bars, truffles, cookies, candies, cakes... I actually eat about half sweets and half real food in a regular day. It's a huge stress reliever, and it tastes good!

Back to the boss, though. We're in my review talking about my expanding role with the firm and the raise I am about to get, and everything is going swimmingly until we get to the areas for improvement part. Boss says she would like me to work on being healthier. What?!?!?!??! "You give good phone," she says. You give good phone. You give good phone. I'm still going to be hearing that in my head when I'm 80. Then she went on to say that if I was "healthier" and "fit" I would exude confidence and happiness and then they would have me meet with clients... but at this point I "cannot be presented."

I guess I could cry, or look for a new job, or eat some damned truffles while I rot behind my desk. It's the sick unspoken law that my mother always told me: certain jobs require certain looks, employers do discriminate, and you have to play the game. I'm drawn to "sexy" industries and client facing roles, so I have to look the part. I learned it at 21 years old when the brokerage firm where I worked was interviewing for a new broker. "Too old," "too fat," "too ugly," I heard as one after another paraded through the door. Maybe I should thank my current boss for giving me the reminder, however rude, obnoxious and inappropriate it was to say. I'm also not too proud to say that I would like to be a little healthier so I can run around after Matilda without getting winded and not feel so uncomfortable in my expanding skin.

So, my "things to work on" for the next 90 days (at which point I actually get another review) are:

1. Being as "healthy" as possible
2. Buying the most expensive suit I can afford (after completion of goal #1)
3. Writing (even though most of her emails are incomprehensible *I* have to work on *MY* writing... but THAT is another blog).

Blog, How I've Missed Thee

Life the past few months has swallowed me whole. I work from 9-6 and my commute starts at 7:30am taking Matilda to Grandma's. Often Jeff is out of town and I go back to Grandma's to pick her up after work, and wind up getting home at 8pm. If Jeff is in town I get home at 6:30 (except during the toll tag debacle, which is another blog entirely) and we try to piece together some semblance of a family evening before bed time.

No, this is not a New Year's resolution to get back into blogging. I just miss you guys! I've managed to negotiate two days a week working from home beginning January 1 (for sanity's sake) so I hope to get back to blogging with some of my extra time. The blog is so theraputic, as an outlet and a way to connect with my friends far away. Faebook helps some, but nothing can replace the blog.

Til We Meet Again, Bunny

CH Chaps Baledwr Marcy Playground left us this morning. She'd been having a hard time for a while, but took a turn for the worse again this week. We decided it was time. Since Quinn and I are in Oregon, Jeff took her to our vet. He gave her lots of love as she was falling asleep and said she went very peacefully. She hadn't crossed the line into misery yet, so I am happy we timed it the way we did. Thank you, Jeff, for helping me not drag her down this road too long, and Mandy and Carolyn for telling me it would be okay.

Rest well, Marcy-Marfy-Bunny... the sweet spunky girl who gave us all so much happiness.

Blogging at Work

Writing for business is MUCH different than writing for pleasure or for school. I'm not the best writer, but I'd say I'm above average. I love essay assignments in school because I always pull in an A. Well, 5 edits later, here is my first work blog:

http://www.thealexandergroup.com/blog-press-room

My content never did get edited, but I needed to be less wordy. I also needed to use "big" words like "synchronicities." I'll admit, I ended up feeling slightly unsophisticated by about the 3rd edit. Now, in my defense, our Managing Director has a law degree and a friend in journalism coaching her on blog writing, so she admits that she can't STOP editing. We have a Phi Beta Kappa at our company, and even she gets edited. Still, I have a lot to learn in terms of being succinct and writing to the business audience. It's OK, I'm up for a challenge.

Yesterday I started writing PAs, aka: Professional Appraisals. It's like the story book version of a person's resume. We give it to our clients so they can read about a candidate in more detail. It's a 14+ page document that I have to pull together the info for, dictate, get back in printed version (hopefully they don't include all the "Um's and "Uh's" on my tape) and rewrite. Then, obviously, someone will proofread it before it goes to the client. Let the editing begin!

'Cause that's how Bunny rolls

I can't afford a maid yet, but for $20 a month this is one luxury I can't live without. I haven't had a manicure in months, but Bunny gets door service to keep her crazy nails looking their best.

Updates

I've said this before, but I so rarely get to blog! I'm sacrificing sleep right now, but sometimes I just crave some alone time so it's worth it.

Baby news first: Matilda will be 4 months old next week. I can't believe it! She holds her head up high now, which means she doesn't get all chafed in her neck rolls anymore. Yay! She loves the bath... she can roll over, though it's still inconsistent... and she does a belly scoot that I have yet to see. She spends her days with Grandma, who has graciously offered to watch her while Jeff and I work. They have fun baking cookies, shopping, visiting with friends, playing and learning. She also loves the Beatles, and her favorite song (as far as I can tell) seems to be Yellow Submarine, though daddy is teaching her to dance to twist and shout.

Dog news: Bunny had a big lump on her neck last week when I got home from work. We took her to the vet and think it is a swollen lymph node. It's responding well to antibiotics, which means it is most likely a yucky tooth that's draining and causing an infection. She's going back to the vet after her antibiotics in 2 weeks, and the vet will assess whether she feels comfortable putting her under anesthesia for a much needed dental. On a brighter note, Cosmo and Bunny got the spa treatment from our local mobile groomer last week. I think I am going to have her back every couple weeks to give Bunny a manicure, since she did such a good job and I have a hard time keeping up with it.

Job/school update: I LOVE my job. I'm learning a lot and have been taking on a lot of new projects. The nice thing about a small firm is the opportunity to learn a little bit of everything. One of the recruiters has been particularly great about letting me sit in on the interviews of the people I have screened for her. School took a really interesting twist when my advisor called and told me that one of the course areas I was doing an emphasis in for my general studies degree had started its own major. After reviewing my credits, she found that by switching my major I would shave 17 hours off my degree plan. SOLD! My new major is Learning Technology and Performance Improvement. Like I said, I was taking a lot of those classes anyway and love them, so I'm really happy about that. It will feed well into HR if I want it to, which is a path that makes a lot of sense with my background and what I am doing now for work.

I can't justify too much time away from sleep, so I guess this is my blog for the month. Miss you all!

PS: I have to do my first blog for work next week and have NO idea what to write about. It has to be career related or somehow professionally interesting. Any ideas?

Travel Dates

Sadly, I am going to miss the puppy party that I was so looking forward to. If money was no obstacle I would have done it, but plane tickets for that weekend were $480 each! Ouch! I discovered that by traveling in August I could get tickets for $280 each. Not sure why August 13-20 is such a bargain, but that was the only week in a 3 month block that was going for less than the $480 price... and WAY less. Really adds up when you're buying 2 tix!

So, I would still like to see friends if there happen to be any shows. Miss friends... will drive! Not even opposed to hopping in the car and making a drive to Medford for the day, and maybe hitting Crater Lake while we're there, too. So let me know what everyone's up to August 13-20!

Pics

... catching up cont

note: read post below first, this is a continuation)

it's a lot of fun! i'm doing a lot of the research- finding potential candidates for these positions so the recruiters can call them. of course, when we got busy last week my sales skills couldn't go left untouched. rather than bringing in an independent contractor, i was asked to hit the phones to call candidates and feel out their interest. it was awesome! i had a really good time talking to people, and it was a great way to break up the day. i think i'll get a lot of experience from this job. they use a lot of technology at the office- video conferencing, social media... stuff i need to lear about to be competitive. they also have a company blog everyone contributes to. now that's up my alley!

jeff's mom has been watching matilda during the day to make this whole dual income thing possible, which is really kind of her! i love that matilda gets grandma bonding time- i used to stay with my grandparents and loved having a close relationship with them. in the fall, our plan is for jeff to quit work and go to school (i will also be going, but online). he will stay with matilda on his days off (which he got a taste of this week and loved) and his mom will watch her on his school days.

quinn's been doing well. he did awesome in his band's spring concert playing the snare, and now they're doing summer band camp for marching season. he's going to check out a marimba this summer! i'm excited for that!

i'm trying to plan an oregon visit for july. have to get matilda out there to meet the fam! i've been told if i time it right there's going to be a puppy party. anyone know the dates yet? i'm trying to find affordable tickets and end of july is looking more promising than mid july.

once i get up for the day i'll add some pictures.

catching up

i logged into blog land today for the fist time in weeks and discovered that you friends of mine are back to blogging, full force! a litter of puppies, a van of show dogs stolen and found, 2 baby birthdays, and of course traci showing off that her dogs are just as stupid as mine (getting bit by something) but yet again, far better behaved (resting her head on an ice pack... really?).

i'm blogging from my phone, as i lay trapped under a sweet, restlessly sleeping baby. she's doing really well (thanks for asking, tom, and sorry to say i am behind on facebook responses, as well!) and growing a lot. for her 2 month checkup she was in the 90th percentile for height and weight. i think she was around 13lbs. she's also learning all sorts of new things. she has 3 toys she loves. dolly, giraffe, and her new toy that shoots balls around inside when you push the button. she also has a baby rocking chair, and she is figuring out how to rock, so i had to put something under the leg to keep her from pitching forward too far and eating tile. she likes he chair to be on the floor now, instead of up high on the table, and this little girl can hold her own with the dogs. she's endured some doggy kisses, and lots of sniffs and supervised time spent in her face. they've never made her cry, and in fact, i am pretty sure lucky is scared of her! cosmo likes her, and lily made her smile the other day!

as if i needed to pile more on, i started that new job! i was sad to not be staying home with matilda anymore, but happy to get out of the house, and also thrilled to have an income again! i looove my job. i'm working for a retained executive search firm- basically, companies hire us to find people for their executive positions. we're working on a vice president, an investment analyst, some mergers and acquisitions people...

The only way I get to blog now

Is when Matilda is sleeping...

Sleeping on Auntie Cheska

Babies are A LOT of work. I kind of suspected, but I am not sure you can really be prepared. My kid is particularly high maintenance because she wants to be held 24/7. Mostly it's wonderful to feel so needed and loved, but sometimes you just want to check an email... write a blog... eat. Basic things that you take for granted when you are kid-free. I think I can squeeze anything into a day now, and do it all one handed.

So the latest news is Matilda's 6 weeks old this Saturday. This week she has finally started getting really animated. She laughs and smiles and has a ton of personality. Some of her favorite things include looking in the mirror while making faces and talking to herself as she lays on the changing station in the bathroom; watching any giant flat screen TV she can find (now we are definitely not getting one because we'll have a serious problem on our hands in a couple years!); this week she has learned that she can slam both her legs down in the tub, making a giant splash that gets mama and daddy all wet, and this cracks her up; airplanes from Quinn. She petted Cosmo for the first time this week, and looked at her hands a ton afterward. I guess he felt weird? The other dogs are pretty rude with her. Gentle, but no concept of space. Except for Bud, who keeps his distance since she screamed in his face during their first introduction. Oh yes, and Bunny, who refuses to have anything to do with her.

I am making my last attempt at getting a job next Wednesday. I have an interview at the company my friend Cheska works at. I interviewed there a couple years ago and they were going to offer me the job I had applied for, but then I had to move back to Washington. Well, a position opened up last week and Cheska mentioned to them that I might be looking for work. The HR lady had kept my resume and remembered me, so I have an appointment to meet with the owners next week. If I get the job, I think the salary is such that Jeff could stay home with Matilda. Right now he is working out of town 2-3 weeks a month and that just isn't working out for anybody now that the baby's here. He never gets to see her, and since nobody was here to hold her tonight it took me 2 hours to make a simple dinner. I really hope I get it so things can be somewhat normal. I'll miss being at home with her, but I think we would would have a much better routine as a family if Jeff was here all the time and we had a schedule we could count on.

Other than that, life's been pretty mundane. I have some spring pics I want to add- my little Christmas tree has about 2 inches of new growth and the little purple plant I thought had perished in the snow storm has popped back up. Really, though, Matilda and I are women of leisure. We go browsing at Kohl's when we want out of the house, have lunch with friends (typically homemade, Matilda has not been out to a restaurant yet, though we are trying that tomorrow with Grandma), go play at Grandma's house, shuttle Quinn back and forth to school and band... that's about it. Oh yes, and we sing a lot. Favorites include Baby Beluga (Baby Beluga is THE favorite), Yellow Submarine, Waltzing Matilda, a Harry Belofonte song that goes "Matilda, she take me money and run Venezuela," and lots of show tunes from Annie and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. Oh, and select Bon Jovi hits. Next weekend I am looking forward to the Highland Games, which is fortunately near our house. Matilda just needs a bonnet to keep her from getting a sunburn, and I am hoping to figure out how to make it with the tons of fabric I have stashed in the garage from my mom. This weekend I need to do some serious interview prep while Jeff is home to give me baby relief.

Signing off for now. Need sleep. On the couch. Yes, we sleep in the living room because it's the only place Matilda will sleep right now- in her swing. Hopefully everyone is catching the pics of Matilda on Facebook. It's an easy place to do a quick upload from the cell phone, since I rarely have time to get my hands on a real computer these days. Things keep getting more sane, though (like I got 6 hours of uninterrupted sleep last night!) so hopefully blogging will become easier soon!

Matilda and Cosmo...

are forging a friendship.

First Family Outing

Today we decided to take a drive out to Brenham to see the wildflowers and get me and Matilda out of the house since we were going stir crazy. We ended up detouring and ended up at a state park called Washington on the Brazos where we took a walk and got some good pics. By the time we got back to Brenham baby was screaming about her full diaper and the Bluebell ice cream factory was packed, so we pulled into a parking lot, fed and changed her, and headed home. Not before we terrorized the Wendy's drive through with a screaming baby, though. She was a really good road tripper, just probably had her out too long.

Had to add the Cougar Mom pic, from the car we were following back. Can't beat that for laughs. I want one.

Cosmo and Lily Crate Crunch

I meant to add this a couple weeks ago. I text messaged it to a few of you. Aren't they ridiculous?!

Matilda Post Birth

We just got the pictures from Jeff's mom's camera downloaded onto our computer, so this is actually the first time I am seeing a lot of these, and they make me want to cry. This is my absolute worst case scenario, biggest fear hospital birth scene (other than dying, which fortunately did not happen). Meeting my baby for the first time while unconscious, her being whisked off to the nursery away from me, and her screaming while people dressed in their weird hospital clothes suction out her lungs and monitor everything. Did I mention her entrance into the world was someone grabbing her and pulling her out of my stomach into bright lights? I know it had to happen that way, but it's exactly the scene I was trying to avoid. I don't understand how anyone could choose an elective c-section for convenience (obviously it's smart to choose one if there are risks). It seems way too traumatic to me. I know that she wouldn't have come out any other way, and that the suctioning saved her life. I still feel horrible she had to go through all that, though. Too bad my body couldn't just spit out a kid like it was supposed to.

On a better note, apparently my body does very well feeding a kid like it's supposed to. Miss Matilda has gained a lot of weight! 9lbs at birth, then she dropped to 8lbs 14oz at the hospital. They expect it to take 2 weeks just to get back to their birth weight, but at her checkup yesterday (1o days old) she was 9lbs 13oz. Fat little baby! She's wearing mostly 0-3 month clothes, and today she got into one of the bigger 3 month size sleepers. I love her little chub rolls and her big fat cheeks :)
